Energy - Oil, Gas and Minerals

Geological exploration generates data requiring file copying between storage tiers

Release the Energy Potential in Your Data

Companies in the oil, gas and minerals segment find themselves continually challenged to find and bring into production new fields and mines. Exploration for new oil and gas reserves relies on sophisticated methods that generate immense quantities of data. Acquiring this geologic and seismic data to identify potential energy sources can cost millions of dollars annually. These vast amounts of information must be retained for long periods of time. While costly to acquire, this data is indispensable to establishing the characteristics and value of energy sources or mineral deposits that govern whether the site is worth developing.

The data is typically scattered across many different locations and stored in a wide mix of physical and digital formats, including legacy media that may be up to 50 years old.

One new technology that is leveraging old and newly generated data alike is four dimensional seismic imaging. This data is continuously updated and consolidated with legacy data and is continuously pushing storage capacity to support 4D seismic imaging. Using 4-dimensional seismic imaging for analysis, geologists can pinpoint exactly where to drill to fully exploit reserves or extract core samples.

FilePilot Solution

Consolidating legacy storage

FilePilot Copy™ enables copying data files even while the production systems are in use. Consolidate the legacy shares onto the new storage system and then distribute the desktop shortcuts and you are cutover.

Disaster Recovery

FilePilot Copy™'s simple site licensing model allows for multiple installations of the program. In a high volume data stream the timely information from the data is short lived, but essential during analysis. FilePilot Copy™ can move data files to a DR site and overwrite stored data on a cycle driven by your business. Use of lower cost DR systems reduces overall data storage costs, while maintaining high availability of critical data.

Expanding Storage

Use FilePilot Copy™ to move shares that are less essential to lower cost tier 2 storage thereby reducing overall data storage costs. Simply distributing desktop shortcuts enables continued access to shares by users. FilePilot Copy™'s high speed copying means that you can safely operate your storage systems at a higher level of capacity than previously recommended by storage experts. This increase in capacity allows you to reduce the requirement to purchase additional data storage as an unplanned event.
