Copying medical imaging files securely for compliance.

Reduce Research Risk and Improve Patient Care

Whether it is patient care or cutting edge research, health-focused organizations create massive amounts of data. Pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, and research institutions that are actively involved in genomics, bioinformatics, proteomics research, molecular modeling and molecular simulation, is consuming storage at an ever accelerating rate. Data generated by drug research is long-lived and must be kept in highly secure storage as it requires protection from corruption or tampering of results. This is essential as the data must support all phases of trials and FDA approvals. When requiring movement to new servers or storage, it is essential that all access and security parameters be maintained on the data.

An increasing number of hospitals and diagnostic imaging centers are moving to Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS) to store, manage, display, and deliver digital medical images and improve patient care. Currently, many existing non-digital medical film libraries are maintained in parallel until they can be converted. With the latest push towards electronic medical records, as these libraries are converted into digital format they will drive incredible growth in data storage requirements over the next few years.

In contrast, patient health data has a shorter active lifespan. Once created, patient records are accessed on a periodic basis. Keeping these infrequently accessed patient records in primary storage is not cost effective and upon reaching a preset timeframe they should be migrated to lower cost storage. Since patient data is protected by HIPAA, a fully auditable trail of the movement of the data is required.

Data Migration Challenge

FilePilot Solution

Decommissioning leased servers

Leased servers impose a hard deadline to move data off of them. It's a final operation and all data must be accurately copied to a new system. With FilePilot Copy's simple licensing model you will not have to pay for a license for a server that is being retired. If the new system hasn't arrived, you can copy the contents to a temporary system. FilePilot Copy™ ensures that data is migrated off the leased system in the fastest possible time.

Disaster Recovery

FilePilot Copy™'s simple site licensing model allows for multiple installations of the program. For a specific server or storage system, the ability to immediately move live data directly to a disaster recovery site to a server that may be a lower grade system is a cost effective solution.

Virtualized Storage

With a virtual image the project can move to, and with, the scientists who rely on the data. At each juncture, images and data can be copied from instrumentation into the virtual image with FilePilot Copy™. As the project reaches each new phase, the whole image can be moved by FilePilot Copy™ to the new VM server.

Support for HIPPA compliance

FilePilot Copy™ requires proper credentials for operation, starting with the default set supplied from initial login to the system. FilePilot Copy™ does NOT provide the ability for operators to view file contents. Changing of ACLs is permitted to the extent of permissions and security policies defined in the environment.

Instrumentation Data Storage

Digital instruments have the quandary of generating large data or image files and most have limited storage capacity. To amortize their cost, these instruments must be working constantly. FilePilot Copy™ can be configured to copy each researchers' set of data or images to their respective servers for analysis and storage on a pre-defined schedule. This enables the instruments to be continuously in service.
